Tennis in the Region

Spring/Summer Fun

Well the spring summer season seems to be finally upon us. We are looking forward to an action packed year all across our great tennis region. We have over 50 events scheduled for this Spring/Summer and of course the NCTA adult mixed team league will be starting shortly (Deadline for team registration for session 1 is May 10, 2012) with teams competing from well over half of our regions clubs. You can find all of the NCTA scheduled events at NCTA

This year we are partnering with the Noble Tennis School, OAC & OTA to bring Junior tennis to whole new level in our region. One of the biggest things that our young players miss out on is the opportunity to get quality matches under pressure (tournament play). I have personally been attending a junior circuit in Florida with my son for the last five years and a gentleman named Carlos Casely puts on these great 2 day tournaments for all the kids as they get ready to play a major event like Eddie Herr, Americas Cup, or the Orange Bowl.  So we are bringing this exact model to Ottawa this summer. The weekend before the Roman Cup and Ontario Open begins we will start our circuit. The circuit will be for boys and Girls of all levels from U10-U18 with a two match guarantee (weather permitting). We will break on the Friday of the Roman Cup and Ontario Open and start again on the Monday. This will be an OTA sanctioned event and is being promoted across North America. I would register quickly because draw sizes are limited to 16 players. For some of the top older boys and Girls the Kunstadt Open is also available the week after the Ontario Open. Registration for the circuit is on the OAC website. Registration for the Kunstadt Open can be found at Kunstadt Sports

Second Day Like Rafa Nadal

Just the second day learning to hit left handed. We had some challenges but it is tons of fun for both of us. Little things that we have to watch for again like when I tell him his release reference point on the serve: I have to catch myself from saying the wrong thing because I am so used to saying release at 2:00 and now it is 10:00 on the imaginary clock for the lefty first serve.

The serve was a blast because it is like starting all over again. We really need to break it down and master each piece in the chain because it feels so different for him. Jordan felt like even though he would toss the ball with his right hand his brain was telling him to hurry up because he  has to hit the ball with that same hand (the mind is so powerful). So with each stroke we will create the new motor engrams so he kinetically learns to master each piece. FYI - we are seeing huge footwork improvements because the mind really has to focus on doing the right things to get him lined up and ready before the ball bounces to hit on the left side (pretty cool). I will film that next week... I did not get footwork on film today.

Learning to play like Rafa - Left handed

Having an open mind is crucial for all of us because sometimes life throws opportunities at you and you must simply take them. Follow us over the coming weeks and maybe even months as I teach Jordan Sweeney my son and student to play the game from his left side as his right side goes through the painfully slow Canadian health care system to get fixed. He is currently waiting for an MRI on the right shoulder.

This video is his first day hitting the forehand from the left side - it is short but gives us a starting point.

3-Step AA Ladder

This is a great video -  Athletes must bring the dedication to their sport and they must make a conscious choice to move up the ranks of their sport. Remember it is not about talent but about making a choice by the athlete and only a few truly make a choice.

"What keeps me going is goals" M. Ali

Coaching - do not get fooled.

I know parents that rush their kids all over to try and get the next big coach to work with their son or daughter. I am here to tell you to be careful and start looking for real core components to getting a great coach.

1- Is it Replicable? Is what they have done a fluke? Was it a one time great student or can they produce champions over and over again? Look at the detail that they leverage and look to see that they have a construction mindset.

2-Is it Controllable?   Is this something that has to do with effort, awareness and planning? If you watch the breakdowns, you’ll see how great coaches makes heroes of players who pay attention, who anticipate, who get to the right spot at the right time. If Coaches were a high-school English teachers teaching Huckleberry Finn, they would make heroes of the students who are first to spot the themes and connections in the text, because that’s about awareness and effort.

3- Is it Connective? Is it related to a successful outcome? Every big point is built on a scaffold of solid technique. So focus, like any good construction worker would be placed on the foundational things that made success possible. Each of those small moves (the perfectly executed block) is in fact vital, because without it all the good luck (the big winner) never happens. If coaches were a sales consultant, they would focus on the first ten seconds of the sales call — because without a warm emotional connection, the sale would never happen.

Session 4 working the leveraged Forehand

This is a good side view and you can see how he gets his right foot to 45 degrees in the setup and he is really working on getting the right arm straight prior to and through contact. The straighter the right arm the better the bio mechanics allowing for even more power and jump on the ball.

Working the ACE System in Florida

Jordan working the Ace System in Florida. He strained his right shoulder a few days before (Dec 17,11)  and it was very sore during this match. He manged to play and win the match and he actually played  2 more full matches. We just found out today Feb 14, 2012 that he had actually fractured a bone in his shoulder.

Working the system in Florida Dec 2011. Points start at 0.13 seconds - high heavy middle to low heavy quad 3.Point 2 starts at 1.06 seconds - Serve body takes time and space and goes quad 2. Point three starts at 2.01 seconds - 2nd serve body to high heavy quad three to high heavy quad three to low heavy quad 4. Please subscribe to our page - click subscribe - it is simple to do

Learning the Rafa Forehand - "mastering the heavy forehand"

I am Loving how much players can improve by simply understanding the reference points during each phase of the stroke. Our simple 1-2-3  program can change your game dramatically. This is just his second practice hitting the Rafa forehand and he now hits with with an open stance and the hips start the rotation. His ball is jumping off the court on the landing making it a very heavy ball for his opponent to handle and there is tons of clearance over the net.

Sunday Morning Coffee (The dream) #2

As mentioned I was going to discuss leveraging progressive tennis to help market your club but I think I would rather share the dream (I poured a large cup of coffee). I promise to make sure and address the marketing piece in the next post.

The Dream - For me the dream is to see Tennis be the #1 sport in Canada. What does that mean? I want every parent of a 3-5 year old child to be thinking that their child needs to play tennis first regardless of socioeconomic factors, race and or physical ability. I want every teen or adult looking to get active to think and play tennis first and have a safe and fun place to play the game all year round. I know being in Canada however this will be mountainous goal to achieve with our countries love for hockey and the amazing job soccer has done to capture the youth. We also must be honest and learn from our past - we have done a poor job keeping players playing - do not believe me? Look at the faces at your club- do you see a lot of new ones? Even in this city we have 1000's of kids go through summer tennis camps every year but very few stay in the sport???? This is not any individuals or clubs fault (yet) because we implement a loose system without a direct path to the next piece. Did you know that 80% of clubs still teach the old fashioned way - line up and hope you hit 3-4 balls every 1-5 minutes. Every other sport has already adapted to the players level. Hockey shrinks the rink, soccer shrinks the field and net and baseball uses a tee and shrinks the field. Progressive tennis is here and we must use it for all beginners(regardless of age) to help them to really enjoy the game.

With a real plan of action and some very passionate people  we can get this dream/vision accomplished but within the next 5 years we must build a that true pathway. This plan cannot sit on piece of paper at Tennis Canada or sit in data center waiting and hoping somebody downloads it off a website and takes action.

So what has to happen?

City run programming in public parks and schools must be structured to get kids and new adults (beginners) to play tennis (notice I said play tennis not take a tennis lesson). By leveraging and utilizing progressive balls, nets and a team tennis program we will provide the nourishment to fuel the love for all that try it.

We have to work with the education system to train teachers to provide a new and amazing way for kids to play tennis (be active) in the GYM and or in the school yard. Progressive tennis with its small rackets and foam balls or low compression balls combined with a team concept will help make this simple and fun for everyone.

Team tennis must become a big piece of the pie for both young and old because we all feel the need to belong to something bigger than the individual. Team leagues must be built and run for juniors and adults at the member club level and private clubs.  Regional associations must focus efforts on insuring inter-club team leagues are built and that there is a system in place for the city to also run leagues on the public courts.

As this pathway system gets implemented we will need business partners to help fund additional community indoor facilities and we know for a fact that indoor community clubs with 6 courts( that are run right) are profitable investments for all parties involved.

I have talked enough this morning and the details will follow but honestly here is what it will take to get us moving forward.

As tennis players, associations,  coaches, club board members, staff, educators, city employees, pre-teens, teens, adults,  parents, and anybody else that has a desire to grow and play this game we must no longer act as a group of individuals;

We must be a individuals acting as a community of 1

We must utilize technology, we must communicate as a nation and we need to act as one with a laser vision on growing the game so that it becomes the top of mind sport for all. One of the best things you can do to move the dream forward  is to sign up for free on Courtside Canada and then get your club involved. It is free to join and once we all get on this system we will be connected. We can then very easily communicate and leverage the knowledge of the collective and build a best practices ever evolving (nothing stands still) program and structure.

Let me also quickly tell the skeptics out there who are worried about losing members at their community club because the city provides more and better service on the public courts because in this new model these courts can sustain themselves. Believe me in this model your membership will never be bigger because of the 100 000's of new players that will be introduced and playing the greatest  life long game in the world. We will be trying to find ways to add more courts to your clubs as quickly as possible. And finally, for those of you who really like the status-quo of having your own membership club for the summer where you can always get courts day or night and nobody under the age of 18 seems to trouble you. I hope you join in the fight to build a stronger game but I know in my heart that I or somebody like me will have to answer your emails and calls in a professional manner 5 years from now when you are actually upset that you have to book your court time through courtside at the local club because it is so busy with team tennis, progressive tennis, hundreds of kids and adults all enjoying the community of 1 and simply the BEST GAME IN THE WORLD.

Have a great week everybody and get out there and play.....

Sunday Morning Coffee and Tennis

As I sit here drinking my Sunday morning coffee and Vemma (liquid vitamins). I started thinking about the week and all that really went on for me in tennis.

I spent nearly 25 hours on court coaching (The vast majority being with Jordan) but I did get to do some video analysis for Reghan Lynch as well. I also spent 8 hours reviewing video content in Dartfish (video analysis software). It lets me do side by side comparisons making sure that the kids our meeting all the key reference points compared to Fed and Nadal. I also spent a few additional hours studying pro player footwork on video (fun stuff).

I probably spent two hours talking tennis with other coaches. For example Ben Meeks (coach at the OAC) and I spent a few minutes discussing standards and what kids need to be doing today on and off court to meet their personal tennis goals.

This week I also decided to actually work with another player (adult) - on a part-time basis. This is something that I never thought I would do but they want to learn the ACE system and they were persistent so we will start working together shortly. He has already read the first of two books I asked him to read so I know he is eager.

I chaired our NCTA board of directors meeting on Tuesday and during this meeting both of our sub committees presented their findings.

The Funding committee headed by Phil Johnson has suggested that we drop the individual membership fee and simply go back being an association of clubs. They did some fantastic research over the last 3 months and came back with a great funding model for the clubs and the NCTA based on a three level system. Small, medium, and year round non OTA clubs (OTA clubs have their own model to help support the NCTA and our region). We are simply cleaning up the drafted funding document and will have it out to the club presidents and managers by mid Feb.

The League committee headed by Bruce Ramsay has already done some great work and research through surveys and it looks like that our league players and clubs would like us to focus on team inter club leagues for all levels including a singles inter club team league. If this turns out to be the case then we would focus our efforts on the team leagues but also make available through courtside flex league. The junior leagues and ladders our being worked on as well but no initial report has been made as of yet.

Gary Hawkes who is heading up our regions progressive tennis has been in touch with the OTA, Tennis Canada, the city of Ottawa and local coaches things seem to be moving full steam ahead with this program. This is a very important program to help tennis grow in our region & for those of you who know me you know that I want every summer camp in our region to utilize this system. We are currently looking at ways to help subsidize clubs with some of the cost of equipment.  Gary and Ward (city of Ottawa) have invited Rufus Nel from Tennis Canada to join us next week at the presidents meeting and he will also join us at the City of Ottawas Tennis strategy meeting earlier in the day.

Finally, I  dropped off two racquets to be strung yesterday and I will be dropping off four more today.  I think that is it for the week for me.

Do not forget the Aussie Open starts this evening on TSN 2 at 6:30PM. Remember that I am calling Harrison over Murray in the first round.

You can follow me @ottawtennis on twitter and also feel free to like our Fan Page on the good book Facebook. Search National Capital tennis association.

Have a great week.

Great job Ottawa Clubs

I have been to 3 all season clubs in the last 24 hours and they were all packed (yeah Ottawa)

I was at the Tennis Centre West Ottawa last evening for our NCTA BOD meeting and Sarah the clubs manager told me that their winter memberships have been capped (full).

I coached my son at the OAC today and all 8 courts were busy (which is normal) and we are there during the day 11-4 ( basically non prime time) everyday.

I then jumped in my car and headed over to Carleton University to pick up something and all four courts were booked (again early afternoon non prime time).

This is great to see and hear because my goal has always been to see every summer court in the cities inventory being used like this. We must challenge ourselves as a tennis community to get more people involved. Associations (National,Provincial and Regional), instructors & coaches must leverage new technologies to help deliver better service and programs. In order for us to grow the sport we must all work together. Do not settle, keep looking for ways to do things better and if something is working share it (we live in a world of plenty). If we keep a growth mindset and we are willing do things right then we can be the biggest and most played sport in this region.

Get on the bus?

Happy New Year to all,

So I mentioned in my last post that juniors who are looking to compete at the highest levels must play at least 100 matches per year and I also suggested that our cities location was not the best, making it very hard for most kids to achieve the matches needed.  It is not impossible  (people do it today) but big sacrafices must be made by parents, families, players and coaches.

I started thinking that we need to put some sort of bus system together to get as many kids as possible to the events they need to be at. We could utilize 15 seat passenger vans and get 10-15 kids to tournaments each weekend.

Coaches have a hard time making events but we could leverage technology to film all the matches which can then be reviewed by the playeres coach as soon as poosible - possibly right after the match as these files can be shared in a secure manner online now. It still does not solve the multiple match issue but kids that attend and lose in the first round will still train each day for 90 min (we will book courts) with other bus/tournament participants and they can chart the matches of their bus mates and learn. I think this is a great idea for Ottawa as a region and for our juniors regardless of which club the players attends. This is to maximize the number of matches played each year and to reduce the financial burden on parents.

Estimated cost would be:

1 coach per 5 kids $400 per day ($220 per group 5 for the weekend)
Van rental and gas / by number of kids approx $50 per player (12 players 3 coaches)
Hotel 1 coach room 2 nights ($15 per child)
Players 4 per room $50
Food 10 dollars per meal per player 6 meals ($60)
Snacks and drinks ($25) bananas/water/gatoraide and such
Tournament fee ($45)
Practice court costs ($15)

Approx total for the weekend $480.00 for all 3 days per player ($160 per day)

*As a group we can leverage group discounts which will reduce the cost. Over time we will be able to utilize points (Marriott) to get free rooms also helping to reduce the cost per player.

What do you think?
